Why Would a Medical Doctor and Chiropractor Practice Together?
A few decades ago you would be hard pressed to find an office like Comprehensive Health Orlando, because we have Medical Physicians and Chiropractic Physicians working together for the betterment of our patients. For many years there was a bitter rivalry between the American Medical Association and Chiropractors, that ultimately went all the way to the supreme court in the Wilk Vs American Medical Association case, in which a federal antitrust suit was brought against the American Medical Association by a group of Chiropractors.
Before 1980, “Principle 3 of the AMA Principles of medical ethics stated: “A physician should practice a method of healing founded on a scientific basis; and he should not voluntarily professionally associate with anyone who violates this principle.” Thus Medical Doctors were unable to work with Chiropractors or even associate professionally.The AMA viewed Chiropractors as unscientific even though there was much research and support in favor of Chiropractic care, and patient outcomes were overwhelmingly in favor of it.
The true root of the problem was not due to patient safety, evidence, or outcomes, but business. The American Medical Association saw Chiropractors as a financial threat to their business model and tried for years to put them out of business or minimize them.
On September 25, 1987, Judge Getzendanner issued her opinion that the AMA had violated Section 1 of the Sherman Act, and that it had engaged in an unlawful conspiracy in restraint of trade “to contain and eliminate the chiropractic profession.” ( Wilk v. American Medical Ass’n, 671 F. Supp. 1465, N.D. Ill. 1987). She further stated that the “AMA had entered into a long history of illegal behavior”. And, she then issued a permanent injunction against the AMA under Section 16 of the Clayton Act to prevent such future behavior.”
